Writing Response!

Martin Puryear:
Martin Puryear began is career in panting, drawing, print making and then sculpture. He has a various types of work, but his sculptures are intriguing to look at. Each of his pieces is all different in a way, yet they all connect to each other piece of work. Whether it is the overall form or the repetitive use of texture and technique, they all relate to tell a whole story. I feel that each of his pieces is communicating a bold and daring feeling. The pieces are simple yet the materials that are used tell the story, which is a different assortment of wood. He uses weaving as a form of composition and it feels very basket like. I get the sense of being close and connected. Martin Puryear took the time to think about each of his piece and how they will sit to display. He has three sets of work, one free standing, wall mounted, and monumental. Each of the work fit in either of these categories.
Kendall Buster:
Kendall Buster is a full time professor at Virginia Commonwealth University teaching in the Department of Sculpture and Extended Media. She is a sculptor with several of artworks spread across the world. From Washington, DC, New York City, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Idaho, Berlin, and South Africa. Buster’s has several collections to her name.  I find her artwork to be fascinating to look at. She has such a variety of work, I feel that she keep the overall concept the same, but manages to portray each artwork as its own individual. She has several pieces that actually hang which add another whole dimension to the work. I find these pieces more pleasing to look at because of the form of the artwork and how it is displayed and hung. Though not all of her artwork is hung, the pieces that do sit on the floor is equally pleasing to look at and interesting. I notice that majority of her artwork are of a round form, there is none that is really squared and whole. She also has negative spaces in her pieces, whether it is not closing the entire form of the piece or leaving gaps in-between the pieces, the negative space also adds a different feel to the artwork, it almost feels like a maze. Majority of Buster’s artwork are made of steel and different forms of cloths. Her craftsmanship is amazing. The lines are straight and even the curved lines are perfectly aligned with the crossing wires. When I look at Buster’s pieces I feel a sense of calmness and a softness of each artwork.

project 1,

First project of the semester, photo collage!
I wanted to use the view from my dorm room for my collage. Below are three ideas/mini collages i put together to guide me to my final collage that i will make! so far it turned out nice!

Painters invented photography?

In the text Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes, he states that photography was NOT invented by painters just because of the framing, perspective and camera obscurer. Rather it was the chemist who determined that the light and rays "emitted a variously lighted object." Barthes also speaks of color and how it is an artifice just like a cosmetic, it's not needed but rather an accessory. Depending on the photo, i feel that black and white photos look way better than colored photos. Since the invention of color, black and white is more rare and has an out dated feel to it, but it can bring more meaning and emphasis to an image because of the lack of color making the photograph much stronger. Barthes talks alot about the past and the future and about being there where the photograph was taken, "the photograph does not call up the past,….. photography offers an immediate presence to the world,. a co-presence,…..at once the past and the real." I feel that i agree with what he says, a photograph is a captured moment of the past to keep as a reminder, being co-presence.

exchange;

Exchange;
- To give up (something) for something else; part with for some equivalent; change for another.

Project Summary;
-The class was separated into groups to construct 3D compositions. We were assigned a specific word and as a team, scouted on-campus for locations to place our word, took pictures of the locations, we discussed how to build the letters, the type of glue or adhesive to use and whether they be bare cardboard or painted.

Reflections on Different Parts of the Project;
- The team portion of the Project What language looks like was my favorite part. Not only did we got to construct 3 foot 3D compositions and actually showcase our work. Initially when we first brain stormed for our word we did not have a Christmas tree in mind. Our first thoughts were a bank, bus stop, telephone, library, Wesco, and stairs. We then created a mind map which helped a lot, which led us to the exchanging of gift and Christmas. Throughout this process I learned that making 3D compositions of 8 letters is a pain and that it really dulled out my blade. There weren't too many difficulties that crossed our paths. Overall I enjoyed this project.

Team Dynamic;

My team members were Amber Anschu, Lauren Russell, Pagie Kime, and Myself. We worked well together throughout the whole process. Everyone each contributed something and did not just stand around. During the end of the project Lauren and Kim had  a slight conflict with each other, but it did not affect the project at all. Individually I did not have any issues to work with, it was just the whole building the letter portion that was time consuming.
Reflection of Construction, Placement & Photos;
- After the team finished making and building our three foot letters, we decided to wrap the word in wrapping paper, signifying Christmas and the exchanging of gifts. The words were placed under an oak tree we found near the bell tower. The overall concept worked well together because it was based around the theme of Christmas and gifts.

project 2.

New Project : Make it Better, Design for $5.00. :)

my team members & i  cant decide between these two objects, 3D Glasses & A little magnet container, here are photos. :)

but during class we watched, IDEO deep dive video . :)
& it was pretty interesting to see the IDEO team reinvent the typical shopping cart.
It takes lots of teamwork to redesign a product, out of the box ideas are encouraged.
You have to meet deadline & it takes a lot of brainstorming to come up with the final product!

by design,;

Reading #1, By Design, Toothpicks and Logos, & Understanding Design.

My main-points,
- Design is a process for making things right for shaping what people need.
- Design is everyday life, it affects everyone & result from the choices of human beings.
- Design takes creativity and analytical reasoning, problem solving, learning, evolution, and a social process.

you gotta love design <3

objectified.

During last Monday's class lecture, we watched the film "Objectified."
Can i say it was a neat film about design and the process of it all.

Main Points I got from the video:
- Every object speaks to whom puts it there.
- Design is moving.
- Design takes Teamwork.
- Design is always changing.

:)

What makes good design?

Dieter Rams : Ten Principles for Good Design.
Good Design is,
- Innovative
- Useful
- Aesthetic
- Understandable
- Unobtrusive
- Honest
- Long Lasting
- Thorough
- Environmental Friendly
- Little Design As Possible

After reading this, I had an idea of what "good" design is, but the question was, how can i pick out a "good" design. I can use this as a guide, but a "good" design may not fit all of the qualities. All of these are great quality and traits in a design. Everything is designed wether its good or not. Everyone finds a purpose and usage of everything.

For our first project I started off with 5 items, lint roller, alarm clock, keys, wedges and my desk chair. We did sketches of them and were told to do more sketches of "good" design. I decided to sketch measuring cups and this became my object of "good" design. I chose this object because of the many different positions you could draw and the fact that it would be different and fun. Little did i know that i would get tired of drawing of the same thing for weeks. Nonetheless my object fulfills its purpose of measuring. The design isn't fancy, but its simple and unique. It feels good in your hand and its sturdy. It also has variety of sizes to measure.

Don Norman - Designs That Make You Happy

- Designs should be simple beautiful and useful/functional.
- Design is clever.
- Design if fun.
- Design is pleasant & simple.
- Fear and anxiety changes the way you think.
- Intense fear paralyze your brain.
- Design is subconscious , behavioral, reflective.

Design should be fun. Don says that when your under pressure your less likely be able to work because of the anxiety and stress, but when your happy results are guarantee.

drawings,

So here i am starting my  Tonal & Value drawings, & can i say, im kinda lost? lol but i can get this,.
I need to do a total of twenty drawings, -_-
but nonetheless, im excited to see what my drawings will turn out with the negative spaces and all. :)
it's just the drawing of this measuring cup that i believe is the hardest part.

- there needs to be more time in a day.
